Builds for Protoss Players
These are not proper strategies per-say, but rather different combinations of the soldiers available that use their unique abilities in the best possible way. No strategy will win without a powerful build.
The Deathball.
This strategy is one of the most common, used by almost everyone at one point or another. It is a large group composed of zealots, stalkers, immortals, colossi, sentries, and archons. The idea of the Deathball is to make a single army that can counter anything that attacks it. It has no size limit. The more troops you have, the better.
The Air Deathball
This build is much stronger for the Protoss than for the other races, which is why I'm only putting it in here. It consists of Phoenix (a fast, anti-light, anti-swarm fighter), Void Rays (heavy hitting, anti-armor juggernauts), tempests (the longest ranged unit in the game, used for siege), a couple of carriers (no longer the terrors they were in the past, but still provide good support in a group) and a Mothership (very high health, may only have one, cloaks everything around it but not itself, and has a mass recall ability for quick retreats. Used as a meatwall for the rest of the forces.) The same rules apply to this as to the normal Deathball.
Setup
Go straight to stargates and start bringing in void rays first. Void rays are much more flexible than they should be, and will work well as base defenders. Don't get Phoenix unless your opponent is building air as well. Get lots of expansions, Protoss Air is expensive. build a Mothership Core asap, it will keep you alive. use your units to harass while building up. send your Mothership Core along with them, as it has the same mass recall ability as the Mothership it upgrades into.
Strengths
This will squish almost anything that gets in its way, ground or air. It's so strong it's almost OP. Because the Mothership cloaks all nearby allies, it performs a very similar function to the Tank focus in WoW, keeping its allies safe by making sure all damage is focused on itself.
Weaknesses
This build has no AoE, so watch out for mass Mutas, Vikings (Phoenix don't do a very good job) and other swarms. Also look out for detectors, which will nullify the Motherships cloaking, and as such it's tanking. This build also takes a very long time to get ready, so make sure your base defenses are strong.
